close combat only

get close ("adjacent") to attack

each tank rolls one die... [in boardgame]

roll as many dice as you have tanks (as many as your "strength")

each tank shoots once... [in videogamer]

In Videogamer variant, shots fired (if no modifiers) is equal to number of tanks

outcome of battles is deterministic [in no luck]

In No Luck variant, 1 enemy tank destroyed for every 2 of yours attacking; if odd: one enemy damaged

...so attacker's strength determines dice rolled

roll as many dice as you have tanks (enemy's strength is not relevant)

effective rolls ("hits") are 5 (⚄) or 6 (⚅) [in boardgame]

roll ⚄ or ⚅ to hit the enemy

each shot fired inflicts some damage [in videogamer]

In Videogamer variant, every shot fired somewhat damages the enemy, but without certainty of destruction

a single hit required to destroy a damaged tank [in no luck]

In No Luck variant, attacking a damaged (=half strength) enemy tank surely destroys it

each successful roll destroys one tank

each roll of ⚄ or ⚅ destroys one enemy tank

combat is considered simultaneous

although handled sequentially (player by player), combat is actually simultaneous: everybody has a chance to fight back (even if effectively destroyed: casualties are removed after combat)

terrain affects combat: hills

attacks from hills roll one more die; against hills: one less

terrain affects combat: forests

attacks from forests roll one more die; against forests: one less

terrain affects combat: villages

attacks from villages or against villages roll one less die

situation effects: flanking

if friend on your side: both roll one more die ("flanking")

situation effects: outnumbered

if enemy outnumbers you by 3 or more: roll one less die

sidemountain prevents combat

cannot attack across sidemountain; no flanking help if friend behind sidemountain

+1 if target's on a road

attacks against roads roll one more die; unless attacker's also on road

+2 if target's on rails

attacks against railroads roll two more die; unless attacker's also on railroad

attack always possible with at least one die

attacks against castles roll two less die;
but it is always possible to attack with at least one die
